Free to Be! Anecdotes and Antidotes

This fun, light-hearted collection of scenes and monologues will be taken from Free to be...You and Me, along with works by popular young people’s authors including Shel Silverstein and Judy Blume.

Students wishing to participate in this year’s fall/winter production should be available to attend all rehearsals listed below*.

All students are encouraged to audition; no prior experience needed! All interested students will be given a part, and specific casting will occur after auditions are completed. To audition, please bring a completed Audition Form.

Students wishing to participate as stage/tech crew in this year’s fall/winter production will be contacted by Marci Schein for one informational meeting in October. Crew will be asked to attend rehearsals on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays beginning in November. Tech/stage crew will be required to attend rehearsals during Tech Week and both performance dates.

First LEGO: Robotics

Students will design and program LEGO robots to complete a task, as specified by the First Lego League. The SW team will compete in a First Lego competition hosted by Schechter Westchester on January 21, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

In addition to the regular Thursdays, the following sessions allow for additional practice:

Busing to the Upper School will be provided for Lower School students for the Thursday afternoon sessions only.

Intergenerational Chess with DOROT Westchester

Are you interested in playing chess with older adults at Schechter Westchester? This will be the second year of this wonderful program. Middle and High School students play against seniors 60 plus. A chess instructor is on hand to help everyone improve his or her game. DOROT programs emphasize friendship, shared interests, and the infinite capacity of people of all ages to learn from each other. Learning about the strategy of chess is great for the brain and can be applied to all aspects of one’s life. There is one youth orientation meeting on September 27, and intergenerational play will begin on October 18.

There is no fee for this program, which is coordinated by DOROT Westchester.

Students can work in the Homework Room until 4:20 p.m.

Logic & Labs

Designed for students who are interested in mathematics and science, Logic & Labs is inquiry-based, problem-centered, and sparks students’ curiosity. Students will gain an understanding of how to approach problems using logic, math, and scientific thinking. The program is structured as a series of rotating math and science modules of six weeks each.

Model UN

Do you like to argue persuasively and passionately? Are you interested in learning about current global issues such as global warming, international refugees, and the spread of infectious diseases? Join Model UN, where you will research possible solutions to these issues, study how the actual UN functions, and then try it yourself through an actual debate. Students will learn how to carefully craft an evidence-based argument and how to deliver a strong counter argument. This activity is a good introduction for those students interested in joining the Model UN team in High School.
